Justice Served…with Juice

October 4th, 2008 by ziggy · No Comments · Cool

Thirteen years ago to the day (Oct 3), OJ Simpson was acquitted on all counts of murder in the death of his wife and Ron Goldman, he was found guilty on all 12 counts against him in Nevada. I cannot tell you how happy I am that “the douche”, I mean “the juice”, may spend the rest of his life behind bars. The great thing about this is that the items he was trying to get back by force were items he was (court ordered) asked to give to the Goldman family for restitution in the civil case against him.

It’s a happy day. Such a happy, happy day.

Barney Frank Gets Blasted

October 4th, 2008 by ziggy · No Comments · Politics

Irregardless of where the blame lies, you have to hand it to O’Reilly for doing what most of us would love to…scream at a US Congressman. At one point in this interview, Bill even calls him a coward.

Reusable Shopping Bags Will NOT Save The Planet

September 28th, 2008 by ziggy · No Comments · Environment, World

Ever since the pseudo savior of our planet, Al Gore, started blabbing about how the earth was going to melt-down, companies have been coming up with new ways to profit off our good intentions. The most noticeable to me recently is the reusable shopping bag. I get a kick looking at the smug faces of people as they check out of the grocery store with their assortment of painted plastic bags with the thought that they are superior to others because they have coughed up anywhere from $.99 to $30 for their bags. Granted, some of the reusable bags were given away for free as part of store promotions, but the people with those don’t see to have the attitude I am describing. But I digress..

Facts: Most bags are manufactured in China. Shipped thousands of miles overseas, made with nonwoven polypropylene (which is not recycled plastic) and take years longer to decompose than the traditional plastic bag you get at the grocery store. These bags require 28 times as munch energy to produce as the standard disposable bag and eight times as much as a paper sack.

Desalination Now

September 27th, 2008 by ziggy · 2 Comments · Economy, Politics

As I sit hear reading about the current drought state of my state (California), I cannot help but wonder why we have not turned to desalination since the Pacific Ocean borders the entire western side of the state. Will desalination solve our drought crisis. Maybe. It certainly could not hurt. Used in conjuction with existing water supplies, desalination is the fix we need to see us through these dry times.

Desalination is not without side-effect though. All the salt that is removed from the water needs to go somewhere. In most cases where desalination is used to provide potable water to the masses, the salt is returned back to the ocean. This added salt is devastating to the ecosystem where it is dropped. Similar to the effect of melting icebergs effect on fisheries, where the added freshwater upsets the balance. The addition of all that salt would certainly be detrimental if returned to the sea.
