Free Fouad

A blogger in Saudi Arabia is still in jail and there are no signs of him being released anytime soon.

Fouad al-Farhan, a 32-year-old father of two was arrested on December 10 2007 after he posted a blog entry that was critical of influential Saudi religious figures. Al-Farhan has not been charged with a crime, but under Saudi law can be held for up to six months without charges. He has only been allowed one visit as his jailers are keeping him in solitary confinement.

So much for Saudi Arabia attempting to make changes to how the world perceives them and their treatment of people. Stories like this make me feel lucky that I live in a place where I can criticize the government or religion and not have to worry about being taken to jail.

The following is Fouad’s blog slogan. It appears that he too (along with the younger Saudi generation) is fed up of how things are in that country:

“Searching for freedom, dignity, justice, equality, public participation, and all the rest of lost Islamic values, and for Raghad and Khetab” — a reference to his two children.
