The Quran orders that a man must beat his wife if she does not obey him.

Quran 4:34 - Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel and others because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in their sleeping places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

Essentially, if you treat your wife poorly and she wants to leave you then she is “asking” for a great deal of suffering by the husband’s hand. After reading passages like this it amazes me how followers of Islam can tell the rest of the world that theirs is a religion of peace. Even implying that men are the “maintainers” of women is so wrong. I have no doubt that there are countless women who would love nothing more than to leave their Islamic husbands but do not out of fear of being beaten or killed.
