O.K. Here we go again. Its late September early October and everbody is talking “flu shot”. “Did you get your flu shot?” , “I got my flu shot”, “You need your flu shot”, “Oh you better get your flu shot so you don’t get the flu”, “It’s going to be bad this year”, “You can die if you don’t get the shot”, and on and on and on… Well…guess what? Your almighty powerful glorious flu shot failed this year. Yes, it missed its mark by 47% against Influenza A and 97% against Influenza B. I believe the CDC is giving the public a little better odds because they don’t want to deal with the uproar from the community. Basically you received an ineffective injection into your muscle in your arm or leg (infants, and children) for absolutely no reason(and may have paid for this). Each year its a guessing game. They look at the previous years strain and try and replicate the vaccine to match. The problem is how the virus mutates from year to year. We are seeing a much more powerful, aggresive, form of the virus every year. Many doctors still precscribe antibiotics for “viral” conditions because they are complete morons and want the patient to feel they received some form of treatment to warrant their co-pay and office visit. People do not want to do what it takes to recover from a viral illness such as the flu. They want the quick fix the miracle cure. Heal me now!!! I need to work, I can’t have a headache, body pain, fever, chills, and general malaise. I need to feel 100% and I needed it yesterday is the attitude people have. Oh, hey I have an idea… Lets go clog up all the Emergency Rooms because I think I have the flu and feel like shit. They must have some magic potion to make it all go away. I know they are hiding it and if I show up I’m sure they will give it to me and it will be all over with. Oh… hey little Johnny has a fever 99.7 (for 1 hour) lets take him to the ER. Better yet, little Jane threw up once this morning. Lets take her to the ER also, I know they can fix her and stop her vomiting too. WRONG PEOPLE!!! There is no miracle cure to the flu. Its called rest, fluids, OTC fever reducers/pain medicine…AKA Tylenol and MOTRIN!!!!! It can last 7-10 days and yes you will feel like you were run over by a Mac truck. The ER can’t cure you from the flu!!! We do not have a wonder drug hidden in the stock room marked “flu remedy”. Hey wasn’t your flu shot supposed to do that? And remember ER nurses are here to save your a$$, not kiss it. So if you are looking for sympathy, a warm blanket, a cup of hot tea, stay the hell home, deal with it and let your family wait on you!!!! Use common sense, it goes a long way when your sick. Save the ER visits for people who are truly sick (MI’s, sepsis, respiratorty failure, dehydration, CVA’s, traumas) Oh and by the way if you decide you really are going to die from the flu then bring family with you to discuss funeral arrangemnt in the waiting room beacuse I promise you will have plenty of time to discuss this with them (in the waiting room)!!! Heck… you may even live. What a concept:)
